Witness appeal - Homicide investigation Mardyke Walk, Cork 13th October, 2019

Gardaí at Anglesea Street are appealing for witnesses following the death of a man in his 50s at Mardyke Walk, Cork.

At approximately 12.45am, Gardaí and emergency services were alerted following reports of an injured man and a tent on fire at Mardyke Walk, Cork. Upon arrival at the scene, they discovered an unconscious man with serious injuries. He was removed to Cork University Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The man, believed to be aged in his 50s has yet to be formally identified. 

A post mortem has been carried out by Assistant State Pathologist, Dr. Margaret Bolster this afternoon, the results of which are not being released for operational reasons. 

The scene is currently preserved for technical examination by the Cork City Divisional Scenes of Crime Unit. An incident room has been established and a Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed to the case. A number of statements have been taken and CCTV in the area is being downloaded.

Speaking at the scene Superintendent Michael Comyns said – ‘We are appealing to those who were in Mardyke Walk area between 11pm last night and 1am this morning who may have witnessed any activity in the area to come forward. We are also appealing to motorists who may have passed through Mardyke Walk around these times to make dash-cam footage available to us. There are a number of guest houses in the area with visitors to the city staying last night and we would ask that if anybody seen or heard anything, no matter how insignificant they think it is, to contact us. We are currently treating this as a homicide investigation.'

Gardaí in Anglesea Street, Cork were alerted to a fire and an unconscious man at Mardyke Walk in the early hours of this morning Sunday 13th October, 2019. 

The injured man was removed to Cork University Hospital at approximately 1am this morning.  The man has since passed away.

The State Pathologist has been notified and the scene is currently preserved. The post mortem is due to take place this morning.

Gardaí are appealing for any persons who were in Mardyke Walk area between 12 midnight and 1am this morning and who may have witnessed any activity in the area or any motorists who may have passed through Mardyke Walk around these times and have Dashcam footage to contact Anglesea Garda Station on 021 -4522000, The Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
