Last night 15th March 2018 Gardai from the Commercial Vehicle Unit conducted an intelligence led cross border tripartite operation focusing on tachograph manipulations. Garda personnel along with RSA Enforcement Officers and the Driver and Vehicle Agency Northern Ireland identified a number of targets who were then intercepted at Dublin Port. Gardaí arrested one male for using a magnet to create false records he was taken to Store Street Garda station and charged with dangerous driving and bailed to court in April. Another vehicle was detained as the CRW (Certificate of Road Worthiness) had expired in November 2017.
Following analysis by the RSA a driver was found to be using a digicard belonging to another person, prosecution by the RSA to follow. An articulated lorry was seized by Gardaí for no insurance under Section 41 of the Road Traffic Act.
Note to editor: Magnets interfere and can compromise the breaking and suspension system of a modern HGV. When such devices are used they usually result in a charge for dangerous driving as the definition of dangerous driving includes the condition of the vehicle.
