Operation Thor - Thomastown, Kilkenny on the 19/10/16

As part of Operation Thor, Gardaí from the Kilkenny/Carlow Division have commenced a day of action in the Thomastown area of Co. Kilkenny.

The operation involves high visibility tactical deployment of Garda resources targeting a specific Garda District and is the 9th such day of action in the Division. The operation is aimed at preventing crime, disrupting criminal activity, apprehending persons wanted on warrant and enhancing public relations.

Speaking earlier today Chief Superintendent Dominic Hayes said, "The objective of today’s operation is to disrupt criminals living in and travelling through Kilkenny/Carlow Division and deter criminal activity and promote community engagement. This operation will also assist in the detection of criminal offences through proactive policing activities.”
 
In excess of 140 Gardaí are currently deployed, including members of national units and 50 students Gardaí from the Garda College.

As part of today's operation 41 persons have been arrested. Of the 41, 12 have been detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 for misuse of drugs, burglary, and theft offences. 1 has been arrested and charged with theft offences and brought before a sitting of Carlow District Court and a 28 have been arrested in relation to outstanding warrants.
 
A total of 15 premises have been searched under the Misuse of Drugs and Theft legislation. Cannabis with an estimated street value of €2,000 (analysis pending) was seized during a search of a house. Fireworks, pepper spray and small amounts of illegal drugs have also been seized.
