Further Update - Cathal Sweeney murder investigation on the 8/2/14

A male aged in his 50s arrested earlier today (17/2/2014) as part of this investigation has been released without charge.

A file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

A male aged in his 50s has been arrested by Gardai as part of an investigation into the death of 62-year-old Cathal Sweeney following an incident at a flat in Terenure on the 8th February 2014

The male was arrested earlier today (17/2/2014) and is currently detained under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at Terenure Garda Station.


This is the second person arrested by investigating Gardai. A male aged in his 30s is currently charged and before the courts in connection with this investigation.

Gardai are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a male following an incident at a house in Terenure, Dublin, on the 8th February 2014.

At approximately 5.45 pm Gardai and Emergency Services were called to a flat at a house in the Ashdale Gardens area of Terenure. A male aged in his 60s was taken from the scene by Ambulance to St. James’s Hospital having sustained head injuries. He was later pronounced dead.

A male aged in his 30s was arrested at the scene and is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at Terenure Garda Station. He can be detained for up to 24 hours.

The scene is preserved pending a forensic and technical examination and the state pathologist has been notified.
