Renewed Appeal - Michael Kelly murder investigation

Gardai in Kilmainham are renewing their appeal for information following the murder of Michael Kelly on the 15th July 2013 at Grand Canal Place, Dublin 8.

They are in particular appealing to passengers on a Luas tram (Red Line) which passed the scene of the incident, at an area known as the Dry Canal beside Suir Bridge, at approximately 10.28am on the 15th July 2013 to contact them.

At about 10.30 am this morning 15th July 2013 Gardaí received a 999 call reporting a shooting incident at Grand Canal Place, Dublin 8, an area known locally as the Dry Canal. On arrival they discovered a 27 year old man with obvious gunshot wounds.  The man was attended to by Gardaí and emergency services but unfortunately was pronounced dead at the scene.  

The area was immediately sealed off and a full technical examination begun, the office of the State Pathologist was notified and Dr Michael Curtis the Deputy State Pathologist visited the scene and carried out a preliminary examination of the body. The body of the deceased was removed to the City Morgue Marino and a post mortem examination is currently under way.  

A short time later Gardaí received a call about a four door metallic grey/lilac Opel Astra 99 LH 5711, burnt out at Rialto Court. A firearm was recovered from this vehicle.  The vehicle has been removed for technical examination. A Garda Family Liaison has been appointed and the family of the deceased has been kept appraised of developments.

Gardaí at Kilmainham have launched a murder inquire and are making a number of appeals;  
The scene of the shooting is adjacent to the Luas tram line at the time trams were travelling in both directions. Gardaí are appealing to passengers who may have noticed any activity to contact investigating Gardaí.  

Gardaí have been given a description of a person observed close to the scene.  He is described as 5’10’’ to 6’ wearing a sky blue hoodie with white shoulders.  If you saw anyone matching this description in the area contact the Gardaí.

Gardaí are also interested in the movements of a metallic grey/lilac Opel Astra 99 LH 5711 with 4 doors which was found burnt out, did you see this car prior to 10.30 am this morning.  Did you see this car on St. James’ Walk, South Circular, New Ireland Road or Suir Road it may have been driving in an erratically manner and come to the publics attention.

Gardaí investigating the murder of Michael Kelly on the 15th July 2013 at Grand Canal Place, Dublin 8, have this evening 3rd August 2013, released without charge a man in his 20's. He was detained at Kevin Street Garda station under the provisions of Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act 1939 as amended. The investigation is on-going.
