Stabbing incident in Westport, Mayo on the 9/8/09 - Youth charged

The Garda member remains in intensive care and his condition is described as stable.

 

In relation to this incident, a youth, as mentioned earlier was arrested at scene. He has been charged and will appear at Mullingar District Court at 10.30am on the 10th August 2009.

The injured Garda is Daryl Mullen (32yrs), a native of Tuam.

The Gardai in Westport are investigating an incident in which a member of An Garda Siochana was stabbed in the abdomen at approx. 01.00hrs on the 9th August 2009.

The member was on duty on James St, Westport and while investigating an incident he received a stab injury to his abdomen. He was taken by his colleagues to Mayo General Hospital where he underwent surgery; he is currently in intensive care.

A youth in his mid-teens was arrested at scene by Gardai in relation to the incident and was conveyed to Westport Garda Station where he was detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act; his period of detention was extended earlier this morning.

A knife was recovered at scene.
