Commissioner Fachtna Murphy's Comments on Garda Inspectorate Report On Missing Persons

"Missing Persons Review and Recommendations" was published today, the 15/4/09.

 

The Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy welcomes the Report of the Garda Inspectorate – Missing Persons Review and Recommendations - which was published today. In acknowledging the work of the Inspectorate the Commissioner stated “Missing Persons are a key priority for the policing service provided by An Garda Síochána and the report is timely bearing in mind the increased challenges in this area brought about by the level of migration flows in recent years”.

 

Commissioner Murphy continued “My commitment as Commissioner is to ensure that we build on the considerable work already done by An Garda Síochána and that we fully embrace the findings of the report and harness international best practice in the area of Missing Persons. An Garda Síochána will move forward committed to working in partnership with governmental and non governmental organisations dedicated to locating missing persons”.

 

The Commissioner in noting some of the key recommendations of the report such as; the development of protocols with the Health Service Executive, the establishment of an alert system for missing children, enhanced technology to improve the quality of missing person’s records and closer cooperation with other stakeholders including the Police Service of Northern Ireland, stated that “these matters will be advanced as a matter of urgency as part of the implementation of the report”.
