Kerry murder investigation - 27/3/08 - updates

Gardai can confirm that they are investigating the discovery of 2 bodies in a house in Moyvane, Co. Kerry this morning 27th March.

 

The 30 year old man detained at Listowel Garda station in respect of the murders of Michael and Denis Hanrahan will appear before a special sitting of Listowel District Court at 7.30pm this evening the 31st March in connection with this incident.

The man detained at Listowel Garda station in connection with this investigation has had his period of detention extended for a further period of 24 hours.

Gardai investigating the deaths of Michael & Denis Hanrahan in Moyvane, Co. Kerry, on the 29 March arrested a 30 year old in connection with the investigation. 

The man, from the North Kerry area, was arrested in Tralee at approximately 7.30pm and is currently being detained at Listowel Garda Station under the provisions of Section 30 Offences Against the State Act. 

No further details can be discussed or disclosed at this stage.

Shortly after 9a.m. on 27.03.2008 (Thursday) Gardai were alerted to a house at The Hill, Moyvane, Co. Kerry, where the bodies of two men were discovered.   

The two men have now been identified as that of Michael Hanrahan, aged 60 years and his son Denis Hanrahan, 27 years. 

An investigation was immediately launched into the circumstances of the deaths.  

Preliminary examination of the scene indicated that both men received gunshot wounds.  

Post Mortem Examinations, which took place at Kerry General Hospital, Tralee, last night, have confirmed this to be the case. 

Both men suffered a number of injuries from a shotgun, the nature, number and extent of which are not being disclosed at this time. 

A Crime Scene Investigation team from the Kerry Division, supported later by a Team from the Garda Technical Bureau, undertook a forensic and technical examination of the scene. 

This examination is ongoing at this time and is expected to some time.  Various other investigative enquiries are being undertaken at the moment by a team of in excess of 60 officers based at Listowel Garda Station, supported by national units as necessary. 

A firearm (shotgun) has been located within the house this morning, the relevance of which has not yet been established.

The firearm is the subject of  ballistic examination. 

The motive for this crime is not yet apparent and a number of avenues are being explored by the investigation team.

Gardai in Listowel have completed their preliminary examination at the scene of the discovery of two bodies today.

It remains unclear at this early stage what the sequence of events were which led to these deaths occurring. 

Post mortem examinations are being conducted at the moment and are unlikely to be completed tonight. 

However, it is expected that these examinations will conclude that both men died from gunshot wounds. 

A firearm, licensed to the property, has yet to be located. 

A Press Briefing will be scheduled tomorrow when more facts have been established.  

In the meantime, investigating Gardai are asking that anybody who was in the vicinity of the premises at Moyvane over the last twenty four hours would contact them at Listowel Garda Station on 068 50820.

Gardai can confirm that they are investigating the discovery of 2 bodies in a house in Moyvane, Co. Kerry this morning 27th March.  

The bodies are those of a father and son, aged 54 and 27 respectively.

The scene is currently subject to a technical examination and an investigation is ongoing.  

The state Pathologist has been notified and there is no more information available at this time.
