A large quantity suspected heroin has been seized as part of an investigation targeting drug trafficking in the midlands during operations involving members of the Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau and Gardaí from the Westmeath Division.

Heroin with an estimated street value of €300,000 (pending analysis) was seized when Gardaí stopped and searched a car in Crumlin yesterday afternoon (8/1/2016). A 35-yerar-old male was arrested at the scene and is currently detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996 at Crumlin Garda Station.

During a follow up search yesterday evening, heroin with an estimated value of €100,000 (pending analysis) was seized at a house in the Killucan area of Co. Westmeath. A 26-year-old female was arrested and is currently detained at Mullingar Garda Station under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996.

These operations use advanced analytical and intelligence methods to disrupt criminals and dismantle their networks. Drug seizures play a critical role in targeting the livelihood of criminals and reducing their ability to carry out illegal activities. Drug seizures also help protect communities from the devastating impact of drugs and the associated criminality.

The investigation is ongoing and updates will follow.
