Information about the Carriage Office/PSV Offices

The Carriage Office no longer deals with lost property.  There are 5 designated Garda stations in the Dublin area that manage property that has been found in taxis.  The stations are:
Irishtown: 01 666 9600
Store Street: 01 666 8000
Finglas: 01 666 7500
Tallaght: 01 666 6000
Shankill: 01 666 5900
Any person wishing to trace property left in a taxi should contact any of the above Garda stations or their local Garda station. 

The Carriage Office provides services in the following areas:

  • Licensing of large Public Service Vehicles (PSVs).  
  • Carrying out technical examination of vehicles that are the subject of Garda investigation, such as fatal and serious injury traffic collisions and Garda fleet vehicles involved in road traffic accidents. 
  • Examine vehicle identification numbers on vehicles referred by NCT centres
  • The National Transport Authority is now responsible for the first step for applications for small PSV licences. Please see for further details of the process.

Vehicles registered with the Carriage Office (Dublin County) as of 1st January 2016:

  • 980 Large Public Service Vehicles
  • Approximately 14,500 Small Public Service Driver Licences (for the Dublin area, these are held at the Carriage Office).

The Carriage Office has a staff of 10 - 1 Sergeant, 4 Gardaí, 2 Public Service Vehicle Inspectors and 3 clerical officers.

Renewal of Small Public Service Vehicle Drivers Licence (Outside Dublin)

Procedure for New Application and Renewal of Small Public Service Vehicle Drivers Licence.  (1 to 8 people).

Step 1: 

Contact the National Transport Authority (NTA) on 076 106 4000 or  The NTA will arrange a Small PSV Driver Licence Test
through its centre’s in Dublin, Cork, Galway or Sligo, where the Applicant will
receive an ‘Exam Pass Certificate’. 
Step 2:

Forward the following Documents, only to your Local Garda Station:

1. Application Form - Obtained from any Garda Station or on the right -
New Applications - PSV 15 Form   or    
Renewal Applications - PSV 18 Form

Insure all Sections are read and Form is signed by applicant.

2. Tax Clearance Access Number - Obtained online through, 
Insert in relevant sections on the Application Form.

3. Pass Certificate - New Applications only;  Obtained from the NTA – (See above). Photocopied by Garda Member & Original returned to Driver.

4. Licence Payment Receipt - Obtained from the NTA - Photocopied by Garda Member & Original returned to Driver.

5. Photographs - 3 Large photos approximately 3inch x 4inch (not passport size).

6. Ordinary Drivers Licence - Photocopy of same.

7. Old PSV Licence / Driver I.D Card / Driver Display Card

Renewal Application only, a photocopy of at least one of the above; 

8. Police Certificate of Character - Where an Applicant was born (or resided)
outside the state, for a period of more than one year, he/she must provide a Police Certificate of character from that Country or area of residence.


1. Local Station will complete PSV16 and forward Application to District HQ.
2. Name & Address of applicant must be the same on all Documents, including Tax Clearance Documentation.
