Volvo Ocean Race in Galway City between the 30/6 & 8/7/12

Road closures and parking restrictions

Owing to the vast numbers of people expected to congregate around the city centre and docks area, a system of road closures and parking restrictions will be put in place at certain times on particular days during the festival.


Road Closures:


From 12 noon on Saturday the 30th June until 3pm on the 8th July Bothar Na Long, Dock Road, New Dock Street, Forthill Street, Queen Street, Dock Street, Long Walk, Spanish Parade, and Victoria Place (Victoria Hotel) will be closed to traffic during the temporary road closure times.  This will allow for pedestrians to safely move between Eyre Square and the Race Village.  For this purpose Merchant’s Road will become two-way from its Eyre Square end (Kinlay House) to the junction of New Dock Street (House Hotel) during the temporary road closure times.


A temporary road closure scheme will operate at specific times in the docks area and will involve the following:


1. Closure of Lough Atalia Road from its junction with Fairgreen Road (Radisson) to the docks.

2. Closure of Bothar na Long.

3. Closure of Dock Road

4. Closure of Dock Street

5. Closure of Forthill Road.

6. The changing of Merchants Road from one-way traffic to two-way traffic along its complete length.


Full details of the specific Temporary Road Closures are as follows -


1. Forthill Street & New Dock Street (from Dock Road to Merchants Road)

Period of Closure: From 12:00 on Saturday June 30th to 15:00 on Sunday July 8th, 2012

2. Bóthar na Long, Dock Road, Victoria Place, Queen Street, Long Walk & Spanish Parade (from Dock Road to Merchants Rd Lwr)


Period of Closure:


• From 12:00 on Saturday June 30th to 24:00 on Saturday June 30th, 2012

• From 12:00 on Sunday July 1st to 24:00 on Sunday 1st July, 2012

• From 18:00 on Monday July 2nd to 24:00 on Tuesday 3rd July, 2012

• From 18:00 on Wednesday July 4th to 24:00 on Wednesday July 4th, 2012

• From 18:00 on Thursday July 5th to 15:00 on Sunday 8th July, 2012


Reason:

To facilitate events at the Volvo Ocean Race Village in the Docks.


Diversion Routes:

 A Westbound diversion will be available via Fairgreen or College Road (R339), Forster Place (R339), Eyre Square South (R336), Victoria Place (R336), Merchants Road (R336) which will operate as a two way road during the closures, Merchants Road Lower & Spanish Arch.

Motorists will be encouraged to use The Quincentenary Bridge rather than The Wolfe Tone Bridge if possible.

An Eastbound diversion will be available via Merchants Road (R336), Victoria Place (R336), Eyre Square South (R336), Eyre Square East (R336), Prospect Hill (R336), Bóthar U Eithír & Fairgreen or College Road(R339).


3. Lough Atalia Road, Bothar Pairc An Aonaigh will be open to buses only.


Period of Closure: As required (depending on traffic volumes)

Reason:

To facilitate public transport including Park & Ride from Ballybrit Race Course during peak times of the event. It is strongly recommended to use park & ride to ensure ease of access to the site, particularly during popular events.


Diversion Routes:

A Diversion will be available via College Road (R339) access will be maintained for residents.


4. Claddagh Quay & Grattan Road (From Fr. Burke Road to Claddagh Church)
Will become one way, City Centre bound lane will be closed.
Period of Closure: From 09:00 on Saturday June 30th to 16:00 on Sunday 8th July, 2012


Reason:


To allow safe passage of pedestrians utilising the temporary foot-bridge at the Claddagh Basin.


Diversion Routes:

Seapoint Promenade (R336), Dr. Colohan Road (R336), Whitestrand Road (R336) & Fr. Griffin Road.

5. Salthill Car Park


Period of Closure: From 18:00 on Thursday July 5th to 18:00 on Sunday 8th July, 2012


Reason:


To allow for a viewing area with large screen to be constructed and utilised during Pro-Am and In-Port Racing events, as well as for the Cope Triathlon on Sunday the 8th July. Vehicles left in the car park after Thursday, 5th July may be subject to tow by City Council.


Note: There will also be some restrictions on available spaces in the car park from June 25th until it fully closes on July 5th.


6. Woodquay from Junction with Dalys Place / Eyre Street to St Vincent's Avenue / Headford Road.


There will be no access to Woodquay from St. Brendan's Avenue or St. Anthony's Place.


Period of Closure: From 17:00 on Friday July 6th to 21:00 on Friday 6th July, 2012


Reason:


To allow for the Cope Galway VOR Haka Event


Diversion Routes:


Dalys Place & Eyre Street will remain open at all times.

Diversions will be available via St. Francis Street (Eglinton Street) R863 and St. Vincent's Avenue (R866) and vice-versa.


Note: There will be no parking in Woodquay from mid-night on Thursday 5th July. Vehicles left in Woodquay during the closure may be subject to tow by City Council.


7. Dominick Street Upper from Fairhill (Monroes) to William Street West
Period of Closure: From 22:00 to 02.00 the following morning, between Wednesday July 4th and Sunday 8th July, 2012


Reason:


To allow for on-street entertainment.


Diversion Routes:


 Fairhill or Raven Terrace, Fr Griffin Road (R336), The Crescent (R337) & Sea Road and vice-versa.


Alternative Routes:


Alternative routes for traffic will be via signposted routes


Galway City Council will be making large traffic cones available to be placed along the broken white line of Merchant’s Road. These cones will remain in place for the entire duration of the nine day festival.


Pedestrian Crossings in Race Village:


The Footpaths along Dock Road and Bothair na Long will barricaded each side
to provide for spectator safety while the roads are open to traffic during the
event.


There will be a no of managed pedestrian crossings on Bothair na long and
Dock Road for the durations that they are open to traffic. They will be managed
by Lets Do It Global stewards with assistance of An Garda Siochana where
required to stop traffic to allow crossing.


Park and Ride:


Through consultation involving An Garda Síochána, Galway City and County Councils, the NRA, and festival organisers, a Park & Ride scheme was decided upon to alleviate traffic congestion in the city centre.  This facility will operate on each day of the festival from 9:30hrs to 23:00hrs at 5 minute intervals.  The parking provision will be at the racecourse in Ballybrit and access to vehicular traffic will be through both the dual carriageway and Grandstand entrances.  Passengers travelling to the city on the Park & Ride service will disembark opposite the entrance of the bus station on Fairgreen Road. This service will be operated by ‘Bus Eireann’ with a charge of €5 per adult, children and O.A.P.’s are free.  The specified route will be chosen by the Park & Ride operators, ‘Bus Eireann’, at the relevant times according to traffic volumes.
