The Garda Mounted Unit was established in 1998 and is based in Garda Headquarters, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8. The Unit’s facilities include stables, tack rooms, stores, paddocks and an all-weather training arena. The Unit provides support to Garda Districts in many counties on a regular basis.

Job Description & Skills Required

The responsibility of a groomsperson includes yard and stable duties, exercising of horses, turning out horses into paddocks, adhering to feeding regimes, ordering food and other supplies, waste management, clipping and organising shoeing of mounts. Another vital side of the role includes administration of medicines and vaccinations and liaising with veterinary staff.

Key Requirements: - Have sufficient expertise and a minimum of 2 years service as a professional Groomsperson in order to manage a yard in a disciplined environment. - Have sufficient professional experience to observe and detect early signs of ailments and lameness in horses. - Have acquired skills in the maintenance of tack and equipment. - Have acquired skills in schooling horses etc.. - Be Flexible in work practices due to demands of the Garda Service. The roster is on a 28 day basis 7am to 3.30pm and 11am to 7.30pm, working three Saturday's and two Sunday's. The Annual Leave for this position is 22 working days a year. The successful candidate will be required to successfully clear Garda Vetting.
