Occupational Health


The Garda Occupational Health Service (GOHS) is a part of the Occupational Health and Wellness Directorate which is headed by the Chief Medical Officer. The Service is located at Garda Headquarters.

The of aims of the Service are to -

  • Promote and maintain the physical, mental and social wellbeing of staff.
  • Provide an advisory service which is independent, confidential and ethical.
  • Promote and encourage adherence to health and safety legislation.
  • Promote a culture of health and wellness in AGS.
  • Provide advice on work related issues with regard to health and well-being to Garda employees and management.


GOHS is staffed by a team of specialist occupational healthcare professionals supported by an administration team. The Service is dedicated to supporting the employees of An Garda Siochana to maintain their health and well-being in order to carry out their duties safely and effectively

GOHS provides the following services -

  • Fitness for work advice, including advice on rehabilitation, redeployment, ill-health retirement.
  • Pre-employment medical assessments.
  • Provide support to HRPD and local management for sickness absence management.
  • Immunisation programmes and related blood tests/screening.
  • Management of OBBFE injuries.
  • Health Surveillance on Garda employees involved in safety critical roles/specialised duties.
  • Medical assessment and advice for Compensations Act applications.
  • Health and well-being promotion.
  • Health Screening for members travelling on overseas missions.
