MAT Checkpoint stats and use of Public Transport.

MAT Checkpoints in Dublin December 2016

An Garda Siochana continue to liaise closely with the our public transport stakeholders along with the NTA and whilst no specific figures are available, they are all happy to show that there appears to be a significant increase in public transport usage since the inception of Operation ‘Open City’

The number of MAT Checkpoints  in Dublin  from 1st December to 22nd 2016 was 380 checkpoints with 90 drunk driving detections compared to last years(2015) figure for the same period of 197 MAT Checkpoints and 96 drunk driving detections.

Superintendent Thomas Murphy of the DMR Regional Traffic Division said earlier today  "I am disappointed that the figures are still too high, the slight reduction in this figure is to be commended and that I acknowledge that the public within the Capital and suburbs are heeding the advice of An Garda Siochana and the RSA and utilising the public transport services".

He also said " never ever drink and drive and certainly do not get into a vehicle driven by a person who you know has consumed alcohol.  Heed the advice, travel safe and don’t end up a statistic this Christmas"

An Garda Siochana would like to thank all road user who have taken on board our advice; never drink and drive.
