Message from Garda Commissioner, Martin Callinan on the 24/5/11

The Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan has thanked the public for their understanding, cooperation and support for the recent policing and security operations including those for the visit of HM Queen Elizabeth II and President Barack Obama.

Speaking at Garda Headquarters the Commissioner said:

"The policing and security operation implemented by An Garda Síochána was unprecedented. It would not have been possible without the support and assistance of the community. While we tried at all times to minimise the impact of security arrangements, we know that people were inconvenienced by some of the traffic restrictions. However we appreciate very much the fact that in the course of our work we met with goodwill and good humour from people who were entering into the spirit of the events. We are also both overwhelmed and humbled by the number of positive messages we have received from members of the public."

Commenting on the high levels of partnership and cooperation between a range of State agencies, the Commissioner said:

"I want to thank our colleagues in the Defence Forces who were of immense assistance to us both in the preparation for the recent visits and while they were taking place. We also worked closely with and are grateful to other key organisations including the other emergency services, the health services, the business community local authorities, public transport companies and civic authorities.

"Last, but by no means least, I want to pay tribute to the men and women of An Garda Síochána. I am fiercely proud of the job they have done in ensuring that both our visitors and our country were safe and secure. Their dedication and professionalism is greatly appreciated by both me and our community and I thank them all."
