Abduction of spouse of bank official from her home in Ballyfermot, Dublin on the 28/5/10

Gardaí in Ballyfermot have launched an investigation following the abduction of the spouse of a bank official from her home in Ballyfermot, Dublin 10.

Shortly after 6.30 a.m. (Friday, 28 May 2010) the woman was taken from her house in a vehicle.  A demand was made that the bank official obtain a sum of money from the bank and await instructions.  It is believed that up to five people were involved and some are believed to have been armed.

During the course of the morning, Gardaí became aware of the incident and a comprehensive response team was put in place involving both local and national units.

Just after 12 noon the woman was released and sought assistance from a local resident. She has no physical injuries.

At 12.15 p.m. members from the Organised Crime Unit supported by the Emergency Response Unit arrested a man in his mid twenties at Kimmage Road West. He is currently detained at Crumlin Garda Station under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2007. A sum of money was also recovered (no money is outstanding).

Gardaí are appealing for information from the public on any activity which they might have seen in the following areas:

  • Ballyfermot Road, Dublin 10 from early this morning and in the last few days.
  • Any suspicious activity in the vicinity of the Ulster Bank, Lower Kimmage Road this morning or in the last few days.
  • Steeplechase Court, Fairyhouse where the woman was released just after noon today.

Both the bank official and his wife have been through a traumatic experience and while we appreciate any assistance that media can give us in appealing for information on this crime, we would ask that they respect the privacy of the individuals involved and their home as far as possible.

An incident room has been set up at Ballyfermot Garda Station and anyone with information is asked to contact gardai on 01-6667247 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.
