Investigation into organised crime and arrests on the 25/11/09 - further update

Nine people are currently detained in relation to this investigation.

 

As part of the ongoing Garda investigation into the theft of ATM machines from business premises in the South Eastern and Eastern Regions, a further number of searches were carried out on Thursday 26th November 2009.

 

As a result of these searches 3 people (2 men and 1 woman, ranging in ages from late 20s to early 30s) were arrested and are currently detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

 

In relation to press release (see below), eight of the original thirteen have been released without charge and the remaining five have had their period of detention extended.

 

Today Friday 27th November 2009, four further searches were carried out and a man in his 30s was arrested.  He is currently detained in New Ross Garda Station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

 

Nine people are currently detained in relation to this investigation.

On Wednesday, the 25th of November 2009 a Garda Operation led by Assistant Commissioner National Support Services investigating organised criminal activity, including the theft of ATM machines from business premises in the South Eastern and Eastern Regions, carried out a number of searches and made a series of arrests.

 

Detectives from the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation, including the Organised Crime Unit, along with detectives from the Eastern and South Eastern Regions are involved in the operation.

 

13 suspects have been arrested (10 males and 3 females) and 23 searches were carried out. The arrests and searches took place in a number of locations in Counties Carlow, Wexford, Kilkenny, Dublin and Meath.

 

Those arrested have been detained in a number of Garda stations, 8 under section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007 and 5 under Section 30 of The Offences Against the State Act.
