As part of a planned operation, officers from the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation stopped and searched a car.
Gardai have arrested a man and seized a number of firearms in a planned operation in Co. Laois.
The operation took place on the M7 motorway outside Portlaoise on Thursday, the 28th of May 2009 at about 3 p.m.
As part of a planned operation, officers from the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation stopped and searched a car on the motorway near the town. During the course of the search 6 firearms (2 rifles and 4 shotguns) were discovered. Investigations are ongoing to establish the origins of the firearms.
The driver was a 27 year old man, and the only occupant of the car. He was arrested at the scene and taken to Portlaoise Garda station where he is detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act. He may be detained for up to 72 hours.
