Minister for Justice Equality and Law Reform, Mr. Dermot Ahern T.D. and Garda Commissioner, Mr. Fachtna Murphy will attend the launch of the Garda Mountain Bike Unit expansion at Store Street Garda Station.

There will be a photo opportunity with the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Mr. Dermot Ahern T.D. and the Garda Commissioner, Mr. Fachtna Murphy and members of the Garda Mountain Bike Unit at 2 p.m., Wednesday 2 July 2008 at Store Street Garda Station to mark the expansion of the Garda Mountain Bike Unit.

Background to the Garda Mountain Bike Unit

The Garda Mountain Bike Unit was first established on a pilot basis in two Dublin districts in April 2001. The following year it was expanded throughout the Dublin Metropolitan Region and introduced on a phased basis in Cork, Limerick and Galway.

There are currently over 1,050 members trained and equipped for mountain bike duties nationwide and there are 359 bikes operational in Garda stations throughout the country.

The Units have proved extremely popular with positive feedback from both local communities and business groups.

Tomorrow’s launch marks a significant expansion of the Unit which will result in a one third increase in its strength.

This expansion will see a further 130 bikes allocated throughout the country (bringing the total to just under 500) with some stations receiving an allocation for the first time and establishing new Bike Units.
