Driving School

There are 2 driving schools in An Garda Síochána. The main school is based at the Garda College and provides training for all regions except Dublin.  Members based in Dublin undergo training at the second driving school in Garda Headquarters in the Phoenix Park.

Following recommendations from both Driving Schools and reports by the Garda Organisational Development Unit (ODU) and the State Claims Agency, all training courses provided by Driving Schools were revamped in 2005.

In January 2006 the Standard Car course was reviewed to ensure that standards were being met and best practice adhered to. The resultant changes led to the design of a new 3 week Standard Course which is awaiting approval. This package meets the needs of both the public and An Garda Síochána. It also addresses the relevant recommendations outlined in both the ODU and State Claims Agency recent reports.

The Driving School aims to:-

• Enable drivers to reach the required level of competence
• Provide highest quality training and support
• Develop confidence and knowledge
• Ensure that a Garda Driver is always competent, professional and safe in the performance of his or her duty
