Garda College
Senior Management Development
The Senior Management Development Section was established in 2003 and is led by a Superintendent and support staff.
The Section has responsibility for the Quality Service generally, and for the National Bureau of Human Rights.
Its main focus is the design, management and co-ordination of Executive Level Learning & Development programmes for Senior Officers.
Garda Executive Leadership Programme
This Programme started in September 2006 and provides senior Garda officers with structured opportunities for personal growth and professional development. These officers would usually be considered suitable for service in the rank of Assistant Commissioner and above. The Garda College developed the programme template taking into account submissions from a number of educational providers.
Graduates of the Programme receive an Advanced Management Diploma in Police Leadership and can go on to complete an MSc by research.
The programme is delivered on a part-time basis at the Executive Leadership Centre in the Garda College. An additional overseas module is conducted at the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, Boston. This intensive, one week module gives participants an opportunity to move outside the focused police environment.
