Refurbished Garda Monument of Remembrance to Commemorate Garda Personnel Who Died in Service

- Over 1,800 Garda personnel who died whilst in service over 100 years commemorated by name

- Re-dedication ceremony to take place on 16th September 2023

- Family members of the deceased are invited to express their interest in attending ceremony to gardamemorial@garda.ie

As part of its centenary commemorations, An Garda Síochána has refurbished the An Garda Síochána Monument of Remembrance at Garda Headquarters, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8.

The Garda Monument of Remembrance commemorates the lives and service of all Garda personnel – members of An Garda Síochána and Garda staff - who died whilst in service since the organisation’s founding in 1922. 

The refurbished Garda Monument of Remembrance features the names of over 1,800 Garda personnel who died whilst in service over the last 100 years.

The Garda Monument of Remembrance takes pride of place at the entrance to Garda Headquarters. The original Monument of Remembrance was unveiled on the 21st October 1966 at Garda Headquarters by Minister for Justice, Brian Lenihan, T.D. and Garda Commissioner W. P. Quinn. 

On Saturday, the 16th September 2023, An Garda Síochána will host a re-dedication ceremony to unveil the refurbished Garda Monument of Remembrance, remembering all Garda personnel who died while in service since the organisation’s foundation.

The re-dedication ceremony will take place in An Garda Síochána Headquarters in the Phoenix Park, Dublin 8, and will also be live streamed on An Garda Síochána social media channels.

If you would like to attend this ceremony as a family representative of our deceased colleagues, we invite you to express your interest by email to gardamemorial@garda.ie by the 30th of June 2023. 

As there is limited capacity, An Garda Síochána will confirm formal invites to those wishing to attend after the closing date.

An Garda Síochána currently has over 1,800 names of our colleagues who died in service engraved on bronze plaques around the Monument of Remembrance.

A raised granite platform with two sloping limestone tablets at one side of the Monument holds the names of those 36 Gardaí murdered in the line of duty.

As we are relying in some cases on paper records dating back decades, these records may be incomplete and further names may need to be added to the plaques.

As such, An Garda Síochána is also asking anyone whose family member died whilst in service – members of An Garda Síochána and Garda staff – during the last 100 years to contact gardamemorial@garda.ie by 30th June 2023. It would be very helpful, if possible, if information such as the person’s name on their birth certificate, their date of birth, their registration/staff number, and the Garda station/unit/section they last worked in could also be supplied. 

If a person’s name is not among our current list, every effort will be made to add them for the ceremony. However, if this is not possible, they will be added shortly afterwards and family members will be kept updated.
